Trump’s Border Adjustment Tax could impact dealers/consumer spending

Auto dealers from Wisconsin are joining colleagues from across the U.S. in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to talk with elected leaders about the potential consequences on the industry if border adjustment taxes are enacted.

President Donald Trump and some members of Congress have called for enacting a border tax on parts manufactured in Mexico and exported to the U.S. to help pay for a wall at the border.

Adding a tax to vehicles or vehicle parts could raise the cost of a new vehicle by thousands of dollars at a time when affordability — the average cost of a new vehicle is $35,000 — is taking on more urgency in the automotive industry.
